Rappahannock River users are advised that the river channel is closed for recreational traffic, and use of a portage is required.

The portage was installed to accommodate bridge construction underway for the I-95 Northbound and Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing projects.

Boaters can check the real-time status of river access on this page to learn if a portage is active.

What Rappahannock River Traffic Can Expect During I-95 Construction

Recreational use of the Rappahannock River will continue during construction of the I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.

River access will remain open for the majority of construction, which began near the Rappahannock River in fall 2021 and will be complete in spring 2024. For brief periods, a portage will be installed that will require boaters to disembark from their boat and carry watercraft a short distance across the portage area.

Signs are being posted to notify river traffic of the construction zone ahead. Additional warning signs are posted when a portage is in place.
